Dear FIS TD’s,

See below policy that has been adopted by the FIS NorAm Committee for continuation after a gate fault in Slalom.  This policy is consistent with that of Europa Cup and similar to World Cup penalties for the same infraction of the rule.

I believe this policy is clear in the application of penalties and the responsibility of reporting these incidents in which they must be recorded in the jury minutes and on your TD Report.  Please be sure the details of this policy are covered at your TCM’s for NAC Slalom going forward.

This policy applies only to NAC Slalom events.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

The NorAm Committee Policy on Continuation after a gate fault in Slalom – December 2023

NAC Policy;

Any athlete who continues* after a gate fault (ICR 628.8) in a NAC slalom will be sanctioned and the Jury will apply a penalty of 20 start positions in the next NAC Slalom race that they attend (224.13), whether it is in the current season or the next season.   In the case an athlete continues after a gate fault in slalom at the NAC Finals, the Jury will apply a non-appealable penalty CHF 999 (ICR 224.11) to the sanctioned athlete in lieu of the 20-start position penalty for regular season NAC slalom races.   The penalty must be collected and paid to the FIS per ICR 224.16.

*as a point of reference – continuation after a gate fault could be considered as passing more than 6 gates or 5 seconds beyond the gate of incidence.  In the case a gate fault occurs in close proximity to the finish,  the jury may consider whether the racer’s speed prohibited them from stopping.

Process:

  1. The sanctioned competitor will be drawn as normal at their next NAC Slalom and then a 20 position start penalty will be applied (if drawn 5, then athlete will run with bib 5 at start position 25, if drawn 33, athlete will run with bib 33 starting at position 53 as an example).

  1. The NAC Committee will track these penalties, publish details on the NAC course setter & Referee document,  and will inform OC’s and TD’s of application of these penalties at future events.

  1. Technical Delegates will post these penalties (as they would any penalty) on their TD Report and forward copy of the TD Report to the NAC Chair.

Note – this policy applies only to NorAm Cup Slalom Races and no other races on the North American FIS Calendar
